From the Washington County, Maryland and Franklin County, Pennsylvania areas.  The majority of information below was compiled by Betty Cooper.

        The members of Nichols Family #1 are my ancestors.  The earliest Nichols found was Edward Nicholas.  Edward's birth town and country remain a mystery, as has his arrival in the United States.  Some clues have been discovered that would narrow down the search.  My ancestry line is as follows.  

        Edward Nichols, birth unknown, died around 1777 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.  He married Sarah Unknown around 1727.  Children of the marriage:

1.  John, born around 1736 in Pennsylvania
2.  Samuel, born around 1740 in Pennsylvania. Died before 1770 in Pennsylvania
3.  Agnes, born around 1742 in Pennsylvania.
4.  Rebecca, born around 1744 in Pennsylvania, Died after 1777
5.  Susannah, born around 1746 in Pennsylvania, Died after 1771.

and  6.  William Nichols, born around 1750 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, died June 1826 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.  Occupation: Farmer.  He married Barbara Unknown around 1790.  She died around 1834.  Children of the marriage:

1.  Sarah, born around 1791.  Married Collison Briley (Birley) on March 2, 1814
2.  Susanna, born around 1794 in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.  Married Ignatious Delosier on October 20, 1805 
4.  Margaret, born March 1796 in Pennsylvania, died March 30 1888 in Middleburg, Maryland.  Married J. Conrad Hamburg on June 25, 1821.
5.  Elizabeth, born around 1798.  Married Lewis Rummel around 1824
6.  John, born around 1800
7.  Henry, born around 1801
8.  Sidney, born around 1803.  Married James Manaham around 1824
9.  Hester (Hetty), born around 1804.  Married John Rummel around 1825.

and  3.  Matthais Nichols, born 1795 in Pennsylvania.  Died April 9 1883 in Washington County, Maryland.  Married Mary Buhrman on October 30, 1819.  Children of the marriage:

1.  Henry, born 1823 in Cascade, Maryland, died August 11 1862 in Washington County, Maryland.  Married Catherine Loretta Unknown around 1846
2.  Ann, born around 1826 in Washington County, Maryland, died November 17, 1849 in Washington County, Maryland.  Married John Keefer around 1841.
3.  Samuel, born 1829, died June 14, 1904 in Washington County, Maryland.  Married Elizabeth Royer in December 1856 in Washington County, Maryland.
4.  Catherine, born 1831.  Married John Izer in 1851 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania
5.  Caroline, born 1833 in Washington County Maryland, died after 1880.  Married William Flanger on March 13, 1855 in Washington County, Maryland.
7.  William Augustus, born July 19, 1838 in Cascade, Maryland, died April 2, 1925 in Cascade Maryland.  Married Susan Virginia Royer around 1865.

9.  Alfred, born around 1846

and  6.  Silas Nichols, born November 1, 1835 in Cascade Maryland, died on February 7, 1893 in Hagerstown, Maryland.  Married Barbara Fessler on April 25, 1861.  Children of the marriage:

2.  Sheridan, born on August 10, 1865 in Washington County, Maryland, died in Hagerstown, Maryland.
3.  Upton, born 1866 in Washington County, Maryland
4.  Mary, born 1868 in Washington County, Maryland

and 1.  John Harrison Nichols,  born February 26, 1862 in Washington County Maryland, died November 18, 1933 in Washington County, Maryland.  Married Mary Elizabeth Boward on August 18, 1885.  Children of the marriage:

1.  Leroy, born April 26, 1886 in Washington County, Maryland.  Married Bessie M. Baker around 1903 in Hagerstown, Maryland.
2.  Bertha Nora, born July 20, 1888 in Washington County, Maryland
3.  John Harrison, born March 17, 1891 in Washington County, Maryland
5.  William McKinley, born on July 20, 1896 in Washington County, Maryland, died on October 19, 1964.  Married Frances W. Williamson around 1916.

and 4. Ethel Maria Nichols, born August 27, 1893 in Washington County, Maryland, died June 1978 in Hillside, New Jersey.  Married Arthur Frielinghaus on May 28, 1913 in Frederick County, Maryland.  These are my Grandparents.
